Winner of the 2020 National Photographic Portrait Prize

Wow! It was a huge (good) shock to win this year’s National Portrait Photographic Prize. Having made the finals I was content just to be having my work of Josh Niland hung in Australia’s premier portrait gallery in Canberra.

Josh, head chef and owner of Saint Peter restaurant, is reinventing what can be done with fish, and – most importantly – with every part of the fish, in a huge effort to drastically reduce wastage. His trailblazing work has received enormous praise from the likes of Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson. We’ve worked a lot together over the past year, mainly on his recent book “The Whole Fish”, and I always enjoy capturing the reverence Josh has for the produce he works with.

Our work together has been an extraordinary highlight in my career. Not only did we win the Portrait Prize together but Josh’s book has gone on to win countless awards.
